On Saturday, June 4, 2016, John and Helen Mattsen will host a ride to a fly-in breakfast at the Anoka County Airport in Blaine. http://www.discoveraviationdays.org/

There will be a briefing at 8:30 AM with a prompt departure from their home at 1859 Mississippi Street in New Brighton. Four miles into the ride we will arrive at the Anoka County Airport for breakfast (Usually pancakes, sausages, and beverages for $7.00 for adults). Of course, purchase of breakfast is not required.

The bridge over Snelling Avenue is back in service so the distance this year will be a little shorter than last year. Perhaps not! Tony and Bean's Anniversary Ride

Saturday, May 20, 2017

Hosts: Tony Abelson and Jean Hurlbert
May 20th - Saturday (our actual anniversary date this year!)
Time: 11 am
Where: Tonka Cycle and Ski – 16 Shady Oak Road S Hopkins, MN 55343
Distance is 40 Miles with (25 Mile Option)

HAPPY 13th ANNIVERSARY TO US. That is about how many years Tony and I knew each other before we hit the wedded bliss part of our relationship. So WOW, over 25 years of which all have been spent bicycling and many tandem bicycling. While we don’t seem to tandem cycle near as much as we used to it is still a big piece of our quality time together. We hope you can come and join us for one of our favorite routes through the hills and dales of Minnetonka including a trip through the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum which should be alive with the Flowering Trees and Tulips. Or join us for an after ride meal and Brewski at the Gold Nugget a few miles down the road.

The Great Longfellow Ride

Sunday, June 4, 2017

Hosts: John and Helen Mattsen

This route gets an A+ for being constantly scenic and interesting. (Therefor “great”).

Distance: Theoretically, 35 miles (or less). In years past, this route has been severely plagued by floods, road construction, rock slides, and has been closed off entirely for sanctioned bike criteriums and rock concerts.

The good news is that there is a steep hill on the course, but we will be going down that hill. The climb back to the ride start elevation is done on three separate “railroad grade” climbs. Almost the entire course is on bike trails or in designated bike lanes on city streets. We will be eating at the Longfellow Grill (for which the ride is named). It’s just two miles uphill from the Longfellow Grill to the end of the ride. One mile up the hill is Izzy’s Ice Cream. The bad news is that many of the people in the club have already done all of the segments of this ride.

Here is the route in a flash. We start at Aldine Park near Snelling and Marshall in St. Paul. Summit Avenue past the Cathedral, down through St. Paul on St. Peter Street, across the river on the Wabashaw Street Bridge, down Water Street bike trails to the yacht club, up through Mendota on the bike trail, over the Mendota Bridge to Fort Snelling, through Minnehaha Park, around the lakes, down the Midtown Greenway to the river, over to the Longfellow Grill, and back up Marshall to Aldine Park. (Okay, there is one little hill on Marshall that is steeper than railroad grade).

We need a couple of cables to tie bikes up to the fence around the patio.

No maps provided. Riders who need to be guided through the course should be able to maintain, say, 14 mph on flat terrain with no wind. However, anyone who knows the route can travel at any speed they like, and increase or decrease the distance as they please.

Meet at Aldine Park (GPS reference 1712 Inglehart Avenue, St. Paul). Sunday June 4, 2017, 8:45 AM briefing with 9:00 AM departure.

Please RSVP by Saturday June 3 to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or Home 651-631-1131 or Cell 651-896-0550.

Ride to Rita’s

Sunday, June 11, 2017

Hosts: Bill & Winnie

Okay, this began as a “ride for coffee”, but there is a Dunn Brothers in the same small strip mall as Rita’s Frozen Custard. The smarter one of us – stokers realize who this would be - decided that frozen custard is more appropriate for a tandem bicycle ride. We’ll leave from Historic Fort Snelling, cross the Mendota Bridge, and ride through parts of Mendota Heights and Eagan. After frozen custard or coffee, we’ll return by a different route.

This will be a mapless, stay-together ride on a route that includes a few significant hills. These are not epic or major climbs, and we won’t be racing up or down them, but some riding experience, low gears, and functioning brakes will be needed. Portions of the ride will be on wide, smooth asphalt trails alongside busy roads that are not at all suitable for bicyclists. The big downside of these trails is that there will be driveways and intersections that definitely require braking prior to beginning a steep ascent. Mild cursing will be tolerated at these locations! Your hosts will enjoy a “Gelati”, a frozen custard layered with “Italian Ice”, to refresh body and soul for the return to the ride start. We hope you will join us on what we hope to be a sunny, warm, windless, and low-humidity day.

Meet by 9:00 am
Ride Start Time: 9:15 am
Total mileage: app. 30 miles

Update 6/7:
Unfortunately, Rita's won't be open. Instead, we'll enjoy iced coffee drinks, fruit smoothies, or bottled juices at Dunn Brothers. They have pastries and other items as well and nice seating indoors and out.

Meet location: The large parking lot at Historic Fort Snelling Visitor Center (NOT down in the valley at the State Park). Unfortunately, the Visitor Center restrooms are closed until Noon.

THE WISCONSIN 2 FER RIDE! - CANCELED

When: Friday evening (gather at hotel) July 6....ride Saturday and Sunday July 7-8, 2018.

Where: Sparta Wisconsin on the Elroy-Sparta Trail (Saturday). Ride the Buffalo River State Park Trail (Sunday) on the way back to Minnesota.

Lodging: Best Western Plus Sparta Trail Lodge: 4445 Theater Road. AARP weekend rate would cost about $250 for both nights taxes included.

THE PLAN! (Weather permitting).

  1. We gather together at the Best Western Friday evening.
  2. If you are not familiar with the Elroy-Sparta Trail, it is characterized by railroad grade climbs in tree lined canopy to a train tunnel....walk through the tunnel (one is 3/4 mile long), and then a descent to another town, all
on hard packed crushed limestone trails. 700 X 25 tires work fine, but 700 X 28 tires are better. Virtually all bike trails in Wisconsin are crushed limestone.
  3. Convenient Round Trip distances would be 22 miles to Norwalk, about 36 to Wilton, 54 to Kendall, and about 66 to Elroy.
  4. Sunday, on the way back home, we travel to the Buffalo River State Trail, probably getting off of Highway 94 at Osseo, WI. We have never done the trail. We will have things figured out by then.

HERE’S THE DEAL!

Because of the cost of the hotel, the distance to Sparta, the weekend commitment, and the relative spur of the moment announcement, we need to know how many tandem teams would attend the event... BY SUNDAY JUNE 24! Not enough interest we cancel the event. Enough people sign up, we can probably come up with a group rate for the hotel.

So, send us an email message with your cell phone number if you are interested in attending this event. John and Helen Mattsen. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
